Puritan Bookshelf CD (Volume Ten)

Authors: John Lightfoot, Thomas Taylor, and William Bates

Lightfoot, Taylor and Bates
If you're interested in reformed theology, the Puritan Bookshelf CDs are a great way to get an extensive library of books, lectures and sermons, for very little expense - and without having to search the world for them in libraries and used book stores. Every CD is packed with a wealth of wisdom and biblical instruction that goes far beyond what is generally seen in our day.

Volume Ten contains eleven books; five massive volumes written by three authors of the 17th century, along with six books by more contemporary covenanters.

"The Works of the Reverend and Learned John Lightfoot" abounds with great history lessons of New Testament times. This book includes a full description of the temple and its service, as they stood in the days when Christ was on earth - complete with a detailed, labelled drawing of the temple, done by the author himself.

Among the many valuable lessons in "The Works of the Judicious and Learned Divine, Dr. Thomas Taylor," is an exposition on Eph. 5:15. The author stresses the importance of the Christian walking circumspectly, demonstrating which areas of life this admonition applies to, and how the Christian is to gain the wisdom he needs in order to obey it. In the words of Dr. Taylor, "A circumspect Christian is not so careful for the... tilling, and sowing of his field, the pruning of his trees, the feeding of his cattle; as in fencing the heart against temptation, in sowing the seed of God's Word, in weeding of sin by the roots out of his soul, in feeding and fostering of grace."

"The Works of the late Reverend and Learned William Bates," contains more than thirty sermons on such practical subjects as forgiveness, the fear of God, and the danger of prosperity. Several of the sermons in this book were preached at the funerals of such eminent and godly men as Thomas Manton, David Clarkson and Richard Baxter.

This is only a glimpse of what is available on these wonderful CDs. I can't recommend them highly enough, to anyone who wants to study Protestant Church History from those who were there.

You can see the full listing for all 32 Puritan Bookshelf CDs online, at Still Waters Revival Books. SWRB also lists a similar set of 30 CDs in their Reformation Bookshelf CD series.

A terrific puzzle workbook similar to Where's Waldo!
This is an entertaining workbook that teaches a child to focus, remember and identify items on colorful pages. The story is very entertaining and the skills developed here will lead to good study habits and strong attention to detail. My 6-year old and I laughed and had such fun as he found the items and solved the puzzles. Excellent busy work for a trip!

Raising Good Kids: A Developmental Approach to Discipline
Published in Paperback by Delta (September, 1994)
Author: Louise Bates, Ph.D. Ames
Average review score:

a condensed version of behavior and discipline approaches
This book is one of the best I've read so far, for many reasons: it's concise, it provides developmental and age-specific information and offers plenty of ideas and surefire don't dos for each age group, from 18 months up to ten years. The book opens with a general discussion on the theory of discipline, and the author clearly believes discipline is more the art of teaching and training a child, rather than the act of punishment. But, don't be put off if you're a hard-liner on matching punishment w/your discipline techniques because the book has something for everyone. The chapter on Ages & Stages breaks down typical behavioral challenges by age group, and then offers a laundry list of different approaches to modify, eliminate or avoid the undesirable behavior(s). The information presented in this section is a tightly condensed version of the lengthier books also offered by this author ("Your One Year Old", "Your Two Year Old", etc.) I had a very difficult time getting through the book, "Your Two Year Old" as I felt the information was scattered and rather unorganized, but I did recognize much of the same detail presented in Raising Good Kids, without all the anecdotal fluff and commentary. In addition to the vastly insightful approach to discipline, Raising Good Kids also offers info on how children differ, various forms of punishment, sibling rivalry, and discipline in day care and nursery settings. As the mother of a challenging child I've read dozens of books on child rearing and found this to be one of the best. The paperback version is only 124 pages, so it's a breeze to get through. Obviously I can't say enough good things about this book. If you're struggling with your child, or having trouble finding a successful approach to discipline, this book is definitely worth the read.

Chomsky is dead or at least dying...
Grammar isn't encoded in our genomes. It is learned. The beginnings of the proof are here. This is an important book. Read it and it's companion: Exercises in Rethinking Innateness : A Handbook for Connectionist Simulations; which gives you hands on with the models discussed.

River Life : The Natural and Cultural History of a Northern River
Published in Paperback by Manitowish River Press (March, 2001)
Author: John Bates
Average review score:

A fascinating exploration of Wisconsin's Manitowish River
In River Life: The Natural And Cultural History Of A Northern River, naturalist and ecologist John Bates takes the reader on a fascinating and informative exploration of Wisconsin's Manitowish River. Packed with historical and environmental information, River Life carefully examines current ecological studies, draws upon fur trader journals and archaeological surveys, and is replete with Bate's own personal observations to vividly describe the "life" of this small northern Wisconsin river. River Life is enthusiastically recommended for students of natural history and river-based ecological systems, and would serve as an ideal template for similar historical and environmental accounts of other small to medium sized rivers throughout the United States.

Safety for Stalking Victims: How to Save Your Privacy, Your Sanity, and Your Life
Published in Paperback by iUniverse.com (July, 2001)
Authors: Lyn Bates and Linden Gross
Average review score:

Valuable and Meticulous Resource on Stalking
This book is a well written guide for anyone involved in the trauma of stalking--and not just the kind you see in those lame TV movies. In addition to providing victims with checklists, how-tos and what-not-to-dos, this would also be a good book for anyone who who knows someone in trouble--significant others, co-workers, family and friends. Bates' opinions are backed up with no-nonsense reasoning and this would also be an excellent book for anyone who writes fiction and wants to use a stalking plot. Each chapter builds the "story" of stalking, from recognizing its signs to coming away safe and each is presented in a useful way, highlighting action items the victim can take to stay safe.

Saving Our Streams: The Role of the Anglers' Conservation Association in Protecting English & Welsh Rivers (Research Monograph, 53)
Published in Paperback by Inst of Economic Affairs (December, 2001)
Authors: Roger Bate and Keith Hartley
Average review score:

There's Nothing Fishy About this book.
Roger Bate follows in a long line of authors who have written for the London based free market institute, the Institute of Economic Affairs. Capitalism by Arthur Seldon, Education and the State by E. G. West and Working Class Patients by David G. Green have all explored the development of solutions to social and economic problems without the state being involved.

The broader historical context can be found in the writings of the Scottish enlightenment, notably Adam Smith who saw the virtues of the free market and the superiority of men acting together to generate a solution which was not planned. later, hayek through his insight of dispersed knowledge recognised the limits to state action which could be overcome through individual economic actors working in concert together.

In this admirable little book, Roger Bate explores the fight that the (now) Anglers' Conservation Association has fought in cleaning up English and Welsh rivers and streams from pollution and other environmental damage. This voluntary club or society if you like has used the tools provided by the English Common Law to battle against polluters whether they be individual farmers, commercial enterprises, local authorities, government agencies (including environmental ones!) or nationalised industries. They have been remarkably successful in saving our streams and rivers despite being of small membership and limited in funds. Despite those handicaps they have fought against all powerful government and it's statute law to establish the pre-eminence of riparian rights.

Roger Bate sets out with remarkable clarity the history of the Anglers' Conservation Association and the principles upon which it is based. He examines the legal basis of the cases which have set the precedents for later action, landmark cases and shows how they have impacted on British Government policy.

If I have any reservation about this book at all it would be that there is not sufficient consideration of the impact of current European legislation and the possible impact of European policy on this area. However, this may be the subject of another research monograph for another day.

The book provides further support and evidence, if anymore were needed, for the superiority of individual action or individuals acting in concert over the futile although well meaning actions of the state. I commend it to all readers.

Senator Thomas J. Walsh of Montana: Law and Public Affairs, from Tr to FDR
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Illinois Pr (Pro Ref) (July, 1999)
Authors: J. Leonard Bates and Richard Lowitt
Average review score:

Real History, Well Done!
The late Len Bates has culminated a life-time of research with this biography of Thomas Walsh, senator from Montana and major political player in the first third of the twentieth century. This work fills a major gap in the account of this period, and speaks most directly to Progressive period and the 1920s, as well as to the surprisingly complex political history of America's Western states. Bates has no particular axe to grin, but confines himself to a measured, factual, but entertaining account that says much about the realities of reform and politics in American society Good history, well done!
